There are so many decisions to make around the holidays. What should you get for your family this season? Should you travel or stay home? What will you wear for family Christmas portraits?

One of the biggest decisions, however, comes down to the type of Christmas tree you get: real or fake? There are good arguments for both sides, and the ultimate decision will be made by you.

Here are a few things to consider this holiday season to help you choose between a real vs. fake Christmas tree:

Reasons to Love Real Christmas Trees

Tradition

There’s something special about getting the family together, bundling up in your winter clothes, and stopping for a cup of hot cocoa or cider on your way to pick out a Christmas tree. It helps you create a tradition that everyone looks forward to each year and instills a sense of togetherness.

Life is so hectic all the time – but choosing and decorating a tree together gives the family a reason to stop and appreciate the simple things. Plus, chances are, no one ever looks back fondly on their trip to the storage closet to grab the Christmas tree.

Variation

A tree in a box is going to look exactly the same every year, but probably a little more worn-out each time that you set it up.

When you go with a real Christmas tree, you know that your tree is going to look a little bit different each year. Every holiday season will be unique with a different tree in your home.

Christmas scents

There’s just nothing like that fresh scent of a real Christmas tree. Pine-scented candles and room sprays can’t compare to the way a natural Fraser Fir smells. The scent alone is enough to get anyone into the holiday spirit!

Environmentally friendly

It might seem counterintuitive to chop down millions of Christmas trees every year, but it actually encourages the growth of more trees. Many Christmas tree farmers will plant more and more trees each year, which helps remove carbon dioxide from the air and protect the environment.

Plus, real Christmas trees are 100% biodegradable. As long as you make sure to remove all tinsel and decorations, your Christmas tree will safely return to the earth.

Reasons to love Fake Christmas Trees

Budget-friendly

Once you buy a fake Christmas tree, you can reuse it many times. If budgeting during the holidays is a concern, this could be the best option for your family.

Apartment-friendly

Getting a real Christmas tree in or out of an apartment in a large complex or on a top floor of a walk-up can be quite a daunting task. It’s much easier to make a trip to and from the storage room.

Funky colors

Perhaps you prefer non-traditional holiday decorations! Fake Christmas trees come in a variety of funky colors, including white, pink, and blue.

These Christmas tree decorating tips will help you decorate your tree like a professional!

Have you always wanted a Christmas tree that looked like it jumped right off the page of a home décor magazine? You don’t have to hire a professional decorator or be an expert in design, yourself. Just a few Christmas tree decorating tips and tricks will enable you to decorate the most beautiful Christmas tree you’ve ever seen!

Tips for Decorating a Real Christmas Tree

Before you start decorating a real Christmas tree, you’ll want to make sure you have it secured into a sturdy stand. If your tree falls over, you’ll have to start from the beginning!

In addition, we recommend having the following tools:

  • Gloves – to protect your hands
  • Scissors
  • Branch trimmer
  • Ladder or step stool – to reach high areas

Choose a theme

Choosing a theme will give your tree a cohesive design. You might pick a color scheme, an ornament style, or a Christmas activity – whatever you pick, stick to only decorations and ornaments that fit within the theme.

Start with the lights

After you’ve selected a color and style of lights that fit within your theme, plug them in to make sure they work. Then, start hanging them at the bottom of the tree and work your way up.

Hang ornaments

There aren’t really any rules to hanging ornaments. You’ll just want to do your best to make sure you aren’t hanging ornaments of similar color, shape, and size together. Variation is important when it comes to hanging ornaments.

Add ribbon

Adding large, sparkly ribbon to your real Christmas tree decorations shouts “professional!” It’s recommended to use a wired ribbon because it’s easy to shape. Try layering two different ribbon styles that go with your theme.

Get creative with your topper

Big, gold stars aren’t the only option for Christmas tree toppers! Your Christmas tree topper is an opportunity to get creative and make your tree even more unique. This year, head to the craft store and create a bouquet with fake wintery plants. Tie them together with wire and secure the bouquet to your treetop. Guests will marvel at your unique take on a Christmas tree star!

There’s no doubt about it – real Christmas trees are better for the environment than fake ones, and we will go into detail about this fact in a bit.

It might seem like chopping down millions of Christmas trees every year isn’t very eco-friendly, but it helps support forests and fight climate change! Yes, fake Christmas trees are reusable, but that doesn’t stop millions of plastic trees from ending up in landfills every year.

Let’s take a look into the plastic Christmas tree industry and how it negatively affects the environment.

Toxic Chemicals in Plastic Christmas Trees

Fake Christmas trees are made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which uses hazardous chemicals and an exorbitant amount of energy during manufacturing. As PVC is manufactured, toxic gasses and liquids are emitted into the environment.

In addition, research found that most PVC Christmas trees are manufactured in China by machines that are powered by coal. This process required a large amount of catalytic mercury, which ends up being released into the environment. One study found that the amount of mercury released into the environment from PVC manufacturing is unknown, but “potentially enormous.”

Real Christmas Trees Combat Carbon Emissions

After toxic chemicals are used to make fake Christmas trees, more are used to ship them from China to the United States and other countries around the world.

On the other hand, it is estimated that upwards of 500 million Christmas trees grow on tree farms throughout the country. It takes about a decade for a tree to grow into a good-sized Christmas tree, and all the time it works to absorb carbon dioxide and turn it into clean oxygen.

Real Christmas Trees Support Local Businesses

When it comes to sustainability, it’s important to look at more than just the environment. Sustainability also relates to the economy and how local businesses are affected by corporations.

Fake trees are almost exclusively sold by massive corporations, like Walmart. Real Christmas trees, on the other hand, are usually sold by small family-owned and operated farms. Or larger farms that distribute to small family-owned and operated businesses.

Either way, every Christmas tree sale supports farms with acres and acres of lush Fraser Fir and pine tree forests – forests that help support a healthy environment, clean air, and wildlife critters.

Support Christmas Tree Farms this Holiday Season

This holiday season, consider supporting a local business that sells Christmas trees instead of a major corporation. Make a new tradition with your family and hand select the perfect tree that will transform your home into a winter wonderland. Enjoy the incredible scent of Fraser Fir and relax knowing that your Christmas tree helped make the world a better place this year.

More families spending the holidays at home, a labor shortage, and inflated prices have all contributed to a national shortage of Christmas trees. Families in central Florida and beyond will experience the effects of this shortage if they don’t act fast.

Christmas tree farms all over the country are worried about meeting the demand this holiday season.

Reasons for the Christmas Tree Shortage

The national Christmas tree shortage is caused by a variety of unpredictable and unmanageable factors, many of which stem from the financial crisis of 2008 and the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.

More Families at Home

The holidays are typically a huge time for travel. Millions of people go out of town to visit family, move home from school for the holidays, or celebrate by going on a family vacation. Now that the pandemic has encouraged more people to stay at home, families have been reconsidering their holiday travel plans.

With more families making new traditions at home, there has been an increase in demand for Christmas trees – and Christmas tree farmers are having a hard time keeping up.

Labor Shortages

There is a nationwide shortage of workers, despite the fact that there are plenty of job openings. With fewer people to work on the farms trimming and chopping trees and fewer delivery drivers, it’s harder to get Christmas trees out to all parts of the country. Furthermore, Christmas tree retail locations will have to sell a smaller amount of Christmas trees if they don’t have enough people to manage the normal amount of inventory.

Higher Production Costs

The pandemic has caused prices to rise on all kinds of products and services. Farming, seedlings, gas and transportation, and tools are all getting more expensive as the days pass. Some Christmas tree farms just don’t have room in their budget to produce the number of Christmas trees they have been able to in the past. As a result, they won’t be able to grow and ship as many trees to retail locations this winter.

How to Secure a Christmas Tree This Year

If you want to be sure to get a real Christmas tree this season, it’s recommended to shop before Thanksgiving weekend. If you wait until too close to Christmas, it will probably be too late.

If you don’t want to bring a Christmas tree home too early, you may be able to reserve your tree ahead of time. Call a few local Christmas tree farms and retailers to ask about their reservation policy. They may be able to hold the tree for a week or two, for a fee.
